You Know You Were an Emo Kid if…

If you were into the rock music scene in the 2000s, you probably listened to Emo, Screamo, Hardcore, or some other sub-genre you rattled off when the poser listening to Good Charlotte asked you your favorite type of music. Here were some of your most identifying characteristics back then:

  1. You heard Atreyu’s song “Bleeding Mascara” and immediately used it as your MySpace screen name.
  2. Alternative Press was your bible.
  3. You considered slam dancing at a show your workout.
  4. A guy you were dating offered to give you a pair of his girl jeans because they were too tight for him. (Pre-skinny jeans for men, you hipster.)
  5. You were pierced. Multiple places.
  6. Having a funeral like the one in the My Chemical Romance “Helena” video was a life goal.
  7. You judged relationship potential by what was on the person’s iPod nano.
  8. Swoopy bangs defined your signature look.
  9. You downloaded anything by Sunny Day Real Estate, The Used, or Dashboard Confessional.
  10. There was no such thing as too much black eyeliner.
  11. You knew Sonny Moore as the singer from From First to Last before he was Skrillex.
  12. Three words: Vans Warped Tour.
